Ep 6: Do You Have Trouble Sleeping? These Natural Methods Can Help

2/26/2019

Welcome to Discover Solutions, Feel Better Podcast. I’m your host Dr. Theresa Lewis. I’m a psychologist who’s passionate about helping people feel better and I have so much to share with you to help you with your health and wellness goals.

In Episode 6 I will be talking about the benefits of sleep. Long, restful restorative sleep is fundamental to our health and well-being. We know the benefits of getting good sleep include:
  • Boosting our immunity
  • Supporting our mental well-being
  • Preventing diabetes
  • Increasing our sex drive
  • Warding off heart disease
Yet, many of us struggle with getting good sleep. Have you ever had difficulty sleeping?
You’re not alone! According to a recent Consumer Reports survey 27% of US adults said they have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep most nights and 68% struggle with sleep at least once a week. The good news is that the common problems that are associated with sleep disturbances like insomnia are often easily and naturally addressed.
There are 3 incredibly helpful, non-drug treatments for insomnia which I’ll explain in detail in today’s episode. They are:
  • Stimulus Control
  • Sleep Preparation
  • Relaxation
In the show notes of episode 4 you will find the download link for the guided muscle relaxation I mention in the podcast. Please give it a try and let me know if it helps you. Thanks for tuning in!
Be well, be you, and breathe.

Welcome to Discover Solutions, Feel Better Podcast. I’m your host Dr. Theresa Lewis. I’m a psychologist who’s passionate about helping people feel better and I have so much to share with you to help you with your health and wellness goals.

On today’s episode I will be continuing my series discussing my Six Foundations of Psychological Health and Wellness that lay the groundwork for us to be our whole self and live the life that we want to live. These Six Foundations are: Awareness, Love, Food, Movement, Relaxation, and Sleep.

Today I will be talking about Food. We are now in the second month of the New Year and it is at this time that our resolutions can start to lose momentum. Since many New Year’s resolutions involve changing the way we eat, I thought this would be the perfect time to talk about the link between food and psychological health.

Here are some of the things I will cover in today’s episode:

  • The bigger picture and how our environment plays a role in our eating habits.
  • What are heavily processed foods and how are they keeping us from receiving adequate nutrition to thrive and feel our best?
  • Why do we often feel stuck in the rut of unhealthy eating patterns even when we know better?
  • The significance of food cravings and how they relate to the nature of our brains.
  • How specific nutrients in our food directly affect our mood.
I will also give you a tool and some tricks you can start using today to help support you on your path to healthful eating.

It is my hope that the information in this episode will help you understand more of what’s going on and how you can help yourself stay on track with healthful, sustainable eating.
I'll be back soon with more inspiration to help you Discover Solutions and Feel Better. Until then, be well, be you and breathe.
